Course Introduction

Welcome to Academic Writing I!

Academic writing is the formal writing style that is required for your university assignments. Academic writing is analytical and it draws on evidence to reach conclusions. If your writing is well-structured, your ideas will be more comprehensible, impactful, and engaging to the reader.

As a new university student, you may have a lot of questions about the writing you’ll do in university. Your success in academic writing depends upon how well you understand the writing process and then how you approach the writing task. Learning how to effectively find, develop and express ideas is also key to success in university.

This course is divided into four weeks. In the first week we will discuss the paragraph structure and techniques on how to generate ideas, and will teach you strategies to improve your research skills. The second week videos deal with the issue of using secondary sources in your writing; plagiarism, direct and indirect quotations.  In the third week we will look at how to write a coherent and unified paragraph. Finally, in the fourth week we examine the concept of introductory and concluding paragraphs and we’ll focus on some helpful strategies for crafting good introductions and conclusions.   In the follow-up practice videos, you can practice what you have learned.
