Activity 1

Now let’s practice what you have learned. 

Add comparison structure words to connect the following comparison sentences. The items contain both sentences and short phrases. You should write one complete new sentence for each item and use different comparison structure words in each sentence. The information in this practice is from the field of political science. The items compare the systems of government of Great Britain and the United States. Please note, the answers may vary. Pause the video and complete the exercise before moving on to the answers.

Example: The United States has a democratic form of government. Great Britain has a democratic form of government. 

Answer: The United States has a democratic form of government, just as Great Britain does. 

  1. The United States operates under a two-party system. Great Britain operates under a two-party system.
  2. The british Parliament has two separate houses, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The United States Congress has two separate houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
  3. The members of the U.S. House of Representatives are elected by district. The members of the British House of Commons are elected by district.
  4. The method of choosing cabinet members in the United States. The method of choosing cabinet members in Great Britain. (Use the structure phrase the same.)
  5. In Great Britain, the cabinet is appointed by the prime minister. The U.S. president appoints the cabinet.

Answer: Both the United states and Great Britain operate under a two-party system. 

Answer: Just as the British Parliament has two separate houses, the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the United States Congress has the Senate and the House of Representatives. 

Answer: The members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the British House of Commons are alike; they are both elected by district. 

Answer:  The method of choosing cabinet members in the United States is the same as choosing cabinet members in Great Britain. 

Answer: In Great Britain, the prime minister appoints the cabinet; likewise, the U.S. president appoints the cabinet.
